Stephanie Kountouros declares candidacy for 40th LD State Senate

A long-time community activist who has lived in the 40th LD for over 13 years, Stephanie Kountouros will bring the crucial perspective of a community leader, social worker, and grassroots organizer to the legislature.

Stephanie galvanized the community as Coordinator of Whatcom for Obama. She led and channeled the enthusiasm for Obama’s campaign into a well-organized grassroots movement and brought together loyal democrats, independents, and a few Republicans to form a lasting community motivated by hope. National campaign leaders noted that Whatcom County’s efforts were the most organized and effective in the nation.

Stephanie has worked professionally with survivors of domestic violence, people with AIDS, mental health and chemical dependency issues. Her work in the social services field includes children surviving sexual abuse and homeless and runaway teenagers.  A staunch advocate, she is dedicated to championing these issues in Olympia.

Stephanie takes pride in working with crucial issues facing our citizens. Compelled to work for long-term change in these areas, she pursued a Masters in Social Work and will graduate June, 2008. Focusing on social justice, her research includes immigration rights, discrimination and issues of aging and labor/poverty issues.

Stephanie is dedicated to active, accountable representation. As a Washington State Platform Representative, she works hard to identify key issues and ensure that all candidates commit to democratic values.

She understands that effective legislation takes more than representatives. It is the strength and organization of community coming together to support and champion issues that gets things done. Stephanie pledges to listen to the concerns of her constituents and build partnership with voters.
